Ethernet in campus housing
Note: You can use Get Connected to register your Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Mac OS X (10.3 and later) computer to use the Indiana University network in campus housing. Computers running Windows 2000 or Linux, as well as game consoles, must be manually registered. For help, contact the UITS Support Center. You cannot register earlier versions of Windows on the IU network in campus housing.
In Indiana University Bloomington or IUPUI campus housing, you will need the following to get connected to the IU campus network:
-
IU Network ID: You need an IU Network
ID before you can connect to the IU network. If you are a
student, you will receive your Network ID when you create your first
computing accounts, or during orientation. If you are a visiting scholar or
faculty, make arrangements with your sponsoring department
for a Network ID. For more information, see Getting your first computing accounts at IU
-
Ethernet card: You need a 10BASE-T or faster
Ethernet adapter or card to connect your computer to the
network. Your laptop or desktop probably has a card installed; look
for an 8-pin Ethernet port similar to the following:

RJ45 Ethernet portIf your computer doesn't already have one, Technology Center Consulting (TCC) suggests that you install the card before arriving on campus, as Technology Center Consultants cannot install it for you. For more, see In IUB or IUPUI campus housing, how do I get an Ethernet adapter or card?
-
Network cable:
-
IUPUI: In Ball Residence Hall and the Campus
Apartments on the Riverwalk, you may use a commercial
Ethernet cable.
- Indiana University Bloomington: If you live in non-Greek campus housing, you will find an Ethernet cable attached to the wall data jack. IUB Greek housing residents may purchase an IU proprietary Ethernet cable; see Getting an Ethernet cable if you live in an IUB Greek house or other IU-affiliated building
-
IUPUI: In Ball Residence Hall and the Campus
Apartments on the Riverwalk, you may use a commercial
Ethernet cable.
-
Get Connected: When you plug your computer's
network cable into the data jack in your room and open a
browser, you will automatically be taken to the Get
Connected site to download software that will automatically configure
your computer for the IU network. To run Get Connected, you need
Windows XP (Professional or Home version) or later, or
Mac OS X (10.3 or later). For details, see Get Connected to IU's network from campus housing
If you are running Windows Vista, your computer must have all Service Packs up to and including Service Pack 2 in order to run Get Connected and thus make a cabled connection to IU's network.
If your computer doesn't automatically connect to the Get Connected web site, go to:
http://getconnected.iu.edu/Note: Before moving into your campus residence, you can run Get Connected in off-campus mode; getting connected to the IU network will be faster once you move in. To run Get Connected, visit:
https://getconnected.iu.eduNote: Once your computer is connected to the IU network, you need to register it for full network access; see Registering your computer on the IU network If you use Get Connected on Windows XP or Vista, you will be taken through this step automatically.
- Surge protector: Use a surge protector to protect your computer, printer, peripherals, and other electronic equipment from power surges.
The IU Secure wireless network is available in all IU Bloomington and IUPUI residence halls (with the exception of Wright), along with the Campus View Apartments. If IU Secure is not yet available in your campus residence, you may operate a properly configured wireless access point (WAP) as an exception to the IT-19 Extending the University Data Network and IT-20 Wireless Networking policies from the University Information Policy Office (UIPO). Once IU Secure is available in your residence, this exception will no longer apply and you will need to remove your WAP from the network. For details, see Wireless access points in residence halls without IU wireless networks
Note: At IUB, once you are connected to the network, you can print from your campus housing residence to your Residential Technology Center's (RTC's) network printer. For instructions, see Printing in campus housing
