Overview
To set up your Exchange account on an Android device, see the instructions below for your version. Not all information will be necessary depending on your specific version and device vendor. Additionally, the requested setup data may be on one screen or on several consecutive screens.

Due to security policies regarding Exchange, you may see a screen during setup requesting you allow Exchange control certain aspects of the device.
Android 5.x and later
- From
Your mail app may be located in a vendor folder such as
or . If so, launch the mail app from there. If you are not prompted to add an account automatically, click . If prompted to choose an account type, select either , , or .
, navigate to the Accounts area; depending on your Android version, this may be in Accounts, Accounts and Settings, Users and Accounts, or within Applications). Select . Choose either , , or .
- Enter your IU email address and passphrase, and then tap . If the device does not automatically detect the server settings, or if it prompts to connect over an insecure connection (cancel this), tap the screen to manually enter:
- Server address:
eas.exchange.iu.edu
- Domain:
ads.iu.edu
- Port number:
443
- Username: Your IU username
- Passphrase: Your IU passphrase
Notes:- If you see a single field named "Domain\username", enter
ads.iu.edu\username
, replacing "username" with your IU username. - On Fire OS, you may need to enter
username@exchange.iu.edu
for the email instead of your primary email address.
Leave
checked, and check if that option is available. Tap . - Server address:
- The "Activate device administrator?" window will appear, detailing the operations the Email app can perform remotely in case of security concerns, including:
- Erase all data
- Set password rules
- Monitor screen-unlock attempts
- Lock the screen
- Set lock-screen password expiration
- Set storage encryption
- Disable cameras
You must allow these security precautions in order to proceed; tap
.These security policies are available for Android, but are not currently being enforced by Exchange.
- To set up your sync options, select Note:On some new Samsung devices (for example, Galaxy S9), a known bug causes email not to sync correctly if you choose to sync all email. To resolve this issue, select a specific amount of time over which to sync your email.
, , , and other preferences as desired. Tap .
- A message will tell you that your account is set up. Enter a name for your account, if you wish; you may also leave the default name. Tap .
If you are unable to sync items such as Exchange tasks or notes, you could consider purchasing Tasks & Notes. UITS does not endorse, support, or guarantee these applications, but some have reported success.
Android 4.x
- From the

- Enter your IU email address and passphrase, and then tap . If the device does not automatically detect the server settings, tap the screen to manually enter the following:
- Domain\username:
ADS\username
- Password: Your IU passphrase
- Exchange server:
eas.exchange.iu.edu

checked, and check . Tap . - Domain\username:
- The "Remote security administration" window will appear with the following message:
The server eas.exchange.iu.edu requires that you allow it to remotely control some security features of your Android device. Do you want to finish setting up this account?
To proceed with configuring your email, tap
. - To set up your sync options, select , , , and any other sync preferences. If this is your primary email account, check . Tap .
- The "Activate device administrator?" window will appear, detailing the operations the Email app can perform remotely in case of security concerns, including:
- Erase all data
- Set password rules
- Monitor screen-unlock attempts
- Lock the screen
- Set lock-screen password expiration
- Set storage encryption
- Disable cameras

- A message will tell you that your account is set up. Enter a name for your account, if you want; you may also leave the default name. Tap .
Android 2.3 and earlier
In some versions, the "Remote security administration" and "Activate device administrator?" notifications described in the instructions above may appear.
- From the menu, select (or ).
- If your device gives you the option, choose .
- Enter your IU email address and passphrase. If this is your primary email account, check .
- Enter the following Exchange server settings:
- Domain\username:
ADS\username
- Password: Your IU passphrase
- Exchange server:
eas.exchange.iu.edu
Leave
checked, and check . Tap . - Domain\username:
- To set up your sync options, select , , , and any other sync preferences.
- Tap .
Use the Gmail app
Your Android device may require you to use the Gmail app to access your mail. The app may already be installed on your device, or you may need to download and install it from the Android Play Store.
Open the app and follow these steps:
- Tap . Scroll to the bottom and tap , and then .
- Select and tap .
- Enter your IU email address and tap .
- Enter your IU passphrase and tap .
- Verify the incoming server settings, and tap
- Username: Your IU username
- Passphrase: Your IU passphrase
- Server address: eas.exchange.iu.edu
- Port number: 443
- Security Type: SSL/TLS
. If the device does not automatically detect these server settings, tap the screen to manually enter the following:
- The "Remote security administration" window will appear with the following message:
The server eas.exchange.iu.edu requires that you allow it to remotely control some security features of your Android device. Do you want to finish setting up this account?
To proceed with configuring your email, tap
. - A sync options screen will appear. By default, your email, contacts and calendar will automatically be synced. You can adjust other sync options here, or leave the default settings. Tap .
- A new window will appear, detailing the operations the Gmail app can perform remotely in case of security concerns, including:
- Erase all data
- Set password rules
- Monitor screen-unlock attempts
- Lock the screen
- Set lock-screen password expiration
- Set storage encryption
- Disable cameras
To proceed, allow these security precautions by tapping
