Get help with GIS at IU

UITS Geographic Information System (GIS) Services provides access to GIS software, and technical support to users. For technical support or questions about GIS software across all IU campuses, complete the GIS Help form.

Several online sources of GIS-related information are available to IU students, faculty, staff:

  • IU Knowledge Base: Contains numerous articles related to GIS, including articles on software installation, GIS training, geoprocessing, managing dataset tables, and spatial data resources.
  • IUCAT (IU's online library catalog): Provides access to a wealth of free tutorials, training guides, software documentation, CDs, and DVDs. To locate GIS- and remote sensing-related documentation and media, log into IUCAT, and then enter your search terms in the "keywords anywhere" field. For example, to see Esri information, enter Esri or ArcGIS.
  • GIS Services: Information about GIS at the IU Libraries

Several helpful resources are available online from Esri, developers of ArcGIS products:

  • Esri Technical Support: This is the best resource for questions about ArcGIS software. Enter your error message or the keywords of your problem in the search box. Look for answers in discussion forums, mailing lists, white papers, and help menus.
  • Learn ArcGIS: Learn to use ArcGIS software with guided lessons based on real-world problems.
  • ArcGIS tutorials: Learn to perform common tasks in ArcGIS. If you installed ArcGIS for Desktop on your workstation, the PDF tutorials were installed by default in c:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop<version>\Documentation.
    Note:
To work through the ArcGIS for Desktop tutorials, you need to install or have write access to the tutorial data from the ArcGIS for Desktop Tutorial Data setup (available from IUware). Once installed, the exercise data should be available on your workstation at c:\arcgis\ArcTutor.
  • Esri Community: Connect and collaborate with Esri customers, partners, and staff, and others in the GIS and geospatial professional community.
  • Esri Press Books: Purchase hard-copy manuals and Esri Press books. Instructors may request free desk copies to evaluate books for course adoption.

Additionally, UITS GIS Services maintains mailing lists for distributing GIS news, software update notices, training announcements, and general user information. For subscription instructions, see Subscribe to an IU List mailing list.

  • gis-users-l: Announcement-only list for news, software updates, and notices about GIS at IU
  • gis-day-l: Discussion list for planning and promoting activities and related events for GIS Day at IU
