Indiana University

Email accounts

As a new Indiana University student, you have the option of creating an email account on the Imail or Umail mail systems when you create your first accounts. Many current students have accounts on the Cyrus (IU Webmail) mail system. In the near future, students on IU Webmail will have the opportunity to migrate their accounts to either the Imail or Umail systems.

As a new faculty or staff member, you can create an email account on IU Webmail or the Exchange system, or both. Check with your department to see if there's a preference. Students can no longer create IU Webmail accounts, but faculty, staff, and affiliates can.

Whichever mail system you use, you can choose among several methods for accessing your email. For more information about available email options, see IU email systems.

If you have more than one email account, or if you wish to read your IU mail at an email address outside of IU, you will need to set up mail forwarding to ensure that you receive all of your mail. See "Setting a preferred address and reading all of your email there" in the Reading email section.

Important: Indiana University provides students, faculty, and staff with IU email addresses, which most academic and administrative offices use to send you messages. If you choose to forward this address to a non-IU account (e.g., Hotmail, AOL, Yahoo!), the UITS Support Center will not be able to help you with problems concerning that account. More importantly, if this forwarding fails for any reason, you may miss important official communications sent to your IU address for which you are still responsible.
